Game 1: KC Scouts 3 - Stars 3
Game 2: KC Scouts 0 - Omaha Jr. Lancers 8 (WHAT???)
So, the weatherman said that while we would be getting snow, it wouldn't be a big deal. It would be over by Sunday morning, and there really wasn't anything to worry about. Well, let me just tell you...
We left for St. Joe this morning with about 4 inches of additional snow on the ground, and the snow plows hadn't been through our neighborhood yet. This wasn't a big deal, except that it was clear that the weatherman got it wrong..
On our way up to the game, the roads started out okay. The farther north we went, the worse the roads got. In fact, at one point, it looked like we were coming up on a jack knifed semi tractor trailer. I quickly figured out when Denny didn't stop that it was a double snow plow. (I couldn't figure out why they were dragging a semi down the highway taking up 2 lanes...) Once we got past this, the roads were even worse. We saw multiple cars off the road and people were down to 25-30 mph. At this rate, we were never going to make it to the game. So, I decide to email one of the parents to let them know we were on our way. It is at this point that we see a white truck facing the wrong way on the side of the road with a couple standing outside. He was looking for something in the cab of the truck, and she was pacing up and down the side of the road - and she didn't look happy. (It kind of reminded me of Denny and I...) HA HA HA! So, being the nice person Denny is, he stops and backs up on the interstate and we offer them a ride to St. Joe. It's too bad that sainthood can't be handed out, because I truly think she would have given it to us - I think she was on the verge of tears. (Likely because of the cold, but I like to think partly because there are still some nice people in the world...) This was the 2nd time they had spun out this morning and their truck was going no where... We got them to St. Joe to a gas station, and still managed to make it to the game with a few minutes to spare. So, already it's been a good day!
Once Alex was dressed and laced up, they got out on the ice and the fun began.
The first game was great! It was a great match up against the team we played yesterday. There were a few more penalties than yesterday, but all in all, the boys played hard. Alex did a great job of getting in there and pushing for the puck. He made a couple of shots on goal (of course I don't have pictures of THAT...) and managed to avoid getting any penalties. The coaches seemed very happy with him and the entire team after the first game. (NOTE THAT I SAID AFTER THE FIRST GAME...)
We had about 90 minutes between games. During this time, I thawed out from standing in the ice box where the photographers and coaches stand, Denny was the score keeper for the 2nd game of the tournament and Alex was busy eating...
When Game 2 started, I walked over to where I stand in MY area to take pictures, and there was a parent with a very nice camera who apparently thought he could stand there too. For a moment, I was actually thinking - who does he think he is? This is MY SPOT! Then I realize that this is an opportunity for me to be nice, just like Denny was earlier this morning. So we shuffled the table around to give us some more room and both started taking pictures. Quickly, we began talking and soon discovered we both went to the same college (at the same time), and actually know some of the same people! So we spent more of our time talking then taking pictures! Oh yeah, and he is a photography instructor -so now I feel like a complete fool because he asks me about my settings as I am trying to figure out why all of sudden all of my pictures are blue... (turns out playing with the settings in between games is a bad thing when you don't remember to put them back to what you had them at before...) So, as I am trying to get my camera set back up so I can actually take some decent pictures, I am also trying not to look like a total poser to the obvious professional. I am pretty sure it was an abysmal failure, but, he was nice and assured me that I will see him while we are at next week's actual tournament in Des Moines. (Note to self - I have 1 week to get the settings on my camera figured out...)

There was one moment where the puck was in play and one of our players was standing with his stick over his shoulders just hanging out...
What makes this so funny is that the puck was in play, and this player who is really good just stood back and placed his stick on top of his shoulders. Even the parent from the Omaha team who was taking pictures snapped a shot because he thought it was so funny! (I heard later that the coach didn't think it was nearly as funny as we did! OOPS!)
Well, as I was busy talking photography with the parent from Omaha that I went to school with, the Omaha Lancers proceeded to skate all over the ice with us. It was extremely disappointing - we aren't sure who was out on the ice, but it wasn't the KC Scout team that we normally see.
They went into the locker room after the game and got an earful from the coaches. Practice on Tuesday should be interesting...
We are off to Des Moines on Friday for a Tournament. I will have pictures and stories of our adventures to share - and I promise to have more pictures - and none that are blue!
Until then stay warm and stay out of the penalty box!
